Small Business Checklist: Year-End Strategies to Drive Growth

As we enter the fourth quarter of the year as small businesses, there are a variety of tasks we can perform now to not only maximize profits in these next few months, but also set ourselves up for growth in the next year. Q4 is a great time in business to analyze our finances, marketing, and growth strategies to ensure we’re on track to meet and exceed our goals.

If you already have a yearly analysis of your business in place, that’s great! If you’re looking for new opportunities to grow your profitability, sales and marketing processes, and financial goals, this list is for you.

Let’s get started.

Finance & Budgeting

Review year-to-date financials & compare to previous year

  • Identify your most profitable products/services.
  • Compare sales and profit margins to previous year; are you up/down?
  • Are there products/services that could benefit from improvements, or should be discontinued?
  • Are there any trends you’re noticing in terms of products/services that could be capitalized on and improved for next year?
  • Compare expenses to previous year; are there any that can be reduced or eliminated?

Review tax strategy

  • Meet with your accountant to discuss year-end deductions, tax credits, and potential write-offs.
  • Discuss strategy changes to maximize profitability for remainder of this year into next year

Tighten cash flow management

  • Follow up on outstanding invoices and create new procedures if needed
  • Negotiate new terms with suppliers if applicable and needed

Forecast Q4 sales

  • Using historical data from past years, set reasonable revenue targets
  • Repeat for forecasting sales for following fiscal year

Sales & Marketing

While year-end marketing campaigns should be planned earlier, if you haven’t already set up your campaigns for Q4, now is the time.

Launch & schedule seasonal promotions

  • Running Black Friday/Cyber Monday or holiday campaigns? Plan & schedule them now.
  • Look at last year’s promotions and campaigns. Assess what can be repeated (without creating fatigue) and what deserves a fresh look.
  • Does your business experience a boost or lag in sales in January? Plan your revenue-generating efforts accordingly.

Review customer & lead segmentation

  • Identify your customer groups
  • Assess if your marketing & sales offers align with their pain points and decision factors
  • Craft new tailored offers for each segment to boost Q4 sales & get a head start on Q1 next year

Upsell & Cross-sell products/services

  • Assess your products/services’ performance this year and consider ways to increase average order value
  • Bundling or repackaging is a great way to achieve this
  • Create special offers for regular customers to renew at current rates (if rates are increasing) or discount/added value to extend subscriptions, etc.

Audit current marketing channels

Create urgency-driven campaigns

  • Craft limited-time offers for boost to Q4 sales on products/services
  • If your business typically has a boost to sales in Q1, consider creating a unique, limited-time campaign tailored to those who buy in Q1, scheduled to boost sales in January

Customer Experience

Your overall customer experience contributes to your brand story and reputation in the marketplace. Having an on-point customer experience from the very first touchpoint to beyond the last sale, focus on your overall customer experience.

Run a customer satisfaction check-in

  • Use surveys, reviews, or testimonials to gauge loyalty
  • Talk to your sales team about feedback they may have received from current buyers
  • Use the feedback collected to create content and special offers for Q4 sales
  • Use the information to make important changes to the buyer and customer journeys in your business for improved response next year

Offer exclusive loyalty perks

  • Treat your existing customers like VIPs, making special offers exclusive to them for boosted Q4 sales
  • Assess current content strategies and determine if any content can be released as early access to existing customers or subscribers
  • Consider ways to create VIP environments for marketing qualified leads or existing buyers to enhance the overall experience with your business

Refresh customer service scripts

  • Assess your current communications and prepare your team for higher seasonal traffic and improved customer service
  • Rewrite scripts to make processes more efficient and on-point

Operations & Productivity

If your business experiences heightened traffic and sales during the Q4/holiday season, it’s important to ensure you maintain the same customer experience as the rest of the year despite increased demand.

Review inventory & supply chains

  • Make sure your inventory levels can meet heightened demand during Q4/holiday season
  • Double check shipping timelines for both suppliers and customers, add clear notations to your website to set expectations
  • If your business is affected by tariffs, develop a communication plan for both customers and sales teams to prevent buyer remorse and confusion

Streamline processes

  • Assess your current processes from start to finish, looking for opportunities for efficiency, spending and loss management, and improved customer service
  • Look for new opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, such as invoicing and reporting

Update cyber security protocols

  • Q4 is a ripe time for fraud and data breaches, so it’s a great time to review how your customer’s data is collected and stored
  • Are your storage measures compliant with current security legislation?
  • Don’t forget that these measures include data collected via online forms; are they compliant with PIPEDA, CASL, HIPAA, or any other relevant acts?

Strategic Planning

Planning for a successful year beyond Q4 is all about strategy and data analysis.

Conduct a year-end SWOT analysis

  • Assess your business’ Strength, Weaknesses, (internal) Opportunities, and Threats (external)
  • Strengths: what is your competitive advantage?
  • Weaknesses: what prevents you (or could potentially prevent you) from achieving your business goals?
  • Opportunities: what are some industry trends or factors that your business can capitalize on to gain a market advantage?
  • Threats: what is currently threatening your business as it operates today and could prevent you from achieving success?

Review and refresh your business goals

  • Look through your analytics for the past year and align your goals with positive trends and opportunities from your analysis noted above
  • Assess your long-term vision for the company and compare to past performance

Plan your road map for the next year

  • Use this year’s data to design your road map for next year
  • Will you release new products/services?
  • What are your most ideal KPIs to determine success?
  • What risks are a factor in your success?
  • Define milestone goals

People & Leadership

If your business deals with people (as we all do), it is imperative to nurture those relationships.

Set priorities

  • Q4 is often overwhelming for business owners, staff, and suppliers. Set priorities to ensure everyone gets what they need to succeed and to avoid burnout

Network and nurture partnerships

  • Q4 is a great time to reconnect and set up collaborations for Q1
  • Discuss wins and losses from the current year and how improvements can be made

Celebrate with your team

  • It is super important to recognize the efforts of your team to boost morale, increase productivity, and maintain retention despite busy times

Wrapping It Up

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and tasks will vary from one business to another. But no matter what type of business you have, Q4 is an ideal time to analyze past performance and make positive changes to your efficiencies, effectiveness, and competitiveness to ensure growth for the coming new year.
